John Thomas Jr Obituary

John “Jack” W. Thomas, Jr. was born on July 17, 1930, in Hiteman, Iowa to John and Georgine Thomas.  Jack is survived by his wife of 71 years, Catherine Thomas, his four children, Georgine Marie Thomas, William Joseph Thomas, Richard David Thomas and Jack Anthony Thomas and their loving spouses; his seven grandchildren, Celeste Blake, Darren Thomas, Rori Daughdrill, Noel Thomas, Traci Weber, Hailey Thomas and Shanyn Crespin, and his ten great grandchildren, Audrey Blake, Alexandria Blake, Hailey Weber, Camden Weber, Kaycee Christ, Ava Christ, Braxton Weber, Charlotte Thomas, Evelyn Crespin and Oakleigh Weber.  Jack was preceded in death by his parents John and Georgine Thomas, his sister Patsy Grimes, and his grandson Benjamin Christ.
Jack graduated from Albia high school in 1948 and went to work for Iowa Power and Light.  He met the love of his life, Catherine Darlene Flahive and they were married at St. Peters Catholic Church in Lovilia, IA on April 25, 1953.
Jack took a job with San Diego Gas & Electric as a laborer in late 1955 and he moved his growing family from Iowa to Encinitas, California in early 1956.  The family eventually settled in San Marcos, CA and Jack and Cathy have resided in San Marcos ever since. Jack was not only a loving and hard-working provider for his family, but he was also very involved in each of his children’s lives, which included all their many extracurricular activities.  He did his best to be present at all their sporting events and activities and has been their biggest fan, even into adulthood.  In addition to being an incredible father, Jack was also a wonderful grandfather. He was very involved in his grandchildren’s lives and was someone that they grew to admire because of his strength, loyalty, honesty, consistency, humor and unwavering faith in the Lord.  Jack’s love and devotion to his family was unparalleled.
Jack was a lover of sports and an avid golfer, spending several days a week, during his retirement, on golf courses across North San Diego County.  He golfed with his buddies and his boys until about the last year of his life.  He loved and loyally watched his San Diego Padres, San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, the fighting Irish (Notre Dame), and the University of Iowa girls’ basketball team.
Jack and Cathy were long standing members of the St. Mark’s Catholic Church Parish, and Jack was also a member of the Knights of Colombus.  The Thomas Family helped establish St. Mark’s in San Marcos and Jack served his church congregation faithfully for many years.
Jack lived an incredible life, was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend and will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
