A.G. Mitkevich was born July 10th, 1944 in Gallenfels, Yugoslavia, in war-torn Europe to displaced Russian parents whose families had fled the Bolshevik Revolution. After the end of WWII, his parents, Grigory and Irene emigrated to Paris, where Alex was fascinated and intrigued with Parisian culture, thusly starting his love of the city and affinity for all things French—a love that lasted a lifetime.
The Mitkevich family moved to Long Island, NY in the late 1950’s where he begrudgingly adapted to his new surroundings. Alex had always said if it had it been up to him, he’d never have left Paris and his life there. Although he missed being in the city he loved, he spent his time with school and going on hikes with friends in the wilderness of NY.
He joined the USMC on February 20th, 1963, a choice he took pride in throughout his lifetime. He loved the Corps and was one of the few Marines to complete Ranger School at Fort Benning, GA and later to receive a Ranger patch with the 75th.
He went to Boot Camp at Camp LaJeune, NC and during his time as a Marine, he served a tour in Vietnam from 1966-1967 as a Sergeant. He was combat wounded there and received a Purple Heart. After that, he completed Airborne Ranger Jump School with 87 jumps to his credit and later completed Amphibious Warfare School in 1977. He spent a number of years as the Commanding Officer of Truck Company 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton and was honorably discharged on December 1st, 1982.
At 38 years old, Alex finished 2nd in class at the Police Academy and in 1983 he joined the Carlsbad Police Department and loved being a Police Officer until he retired in 2008. He continued on with the CPD as a volunteer officer for many years after his retirement. He was also active as a Docent at the Marine Corps Depot giving newly made Marines a lesson in history. The groups were entertained and enriched by his experience and knowledge of Marine Corps history.
One of the last things Alex wished to achieve in his life was seeing all 50 states. He crossed into Kentucky, the last state on his list on October 9, 2018. He leaves behind his beloved wife Camille and family.
