Caroline Wertanen Obituary

Caroline Ruth Wertanen, 88, passed away Friday, September 20th, 2019.

She was born Caroline Ruth Hayden on December 22nd, 1930 to William Hayden and Julia Beers. Caroline, or “Carol” as she was known by many, was the youngest of three children. She was affectionately referred to as “Dolly” by her family. As a young lady growing up in Connecticut, Caroline loved to dance, and learned the art of tap dancing. In 1946, Caroline moved to California, where she ultimately settled in North San Diego County.
In 1964, she married Everett “Ed” Wertanen. Together they settled in Vista, and raised their family. Ed was a United States Marine who served his Country in Vietnam. He was a heavy equipment operator and proprietor of “Big Red’s Backhoe Service” in the 1970’s and 80’s. Caroline worked as a Teacher’s Aide at Grapevine Elementary School, and as a medical secretary at Tri-City Hospital. Caroline is survived by her children: Bonnie Lee Frazier, of Vista; William “Will” Paul Sanders, of Vista; Michael Everett Wertanen, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Linda Ann Harvey, of Vista; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Caroline was a sweet woman. She was kind to everyone she met, she loved life, and she will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her final place of rest will be at Fort Rosecrans in San Diego, where she will be interred October 7th, during a private ceremony.
