Monique "Nicki" Warren Obituary

Monique “Nicki” Theresa Warren, wife, mother, grandmother, and former childcare coordinator at Foothills High School in San Marcos, California, passed away on October 15, 2019 at Palomar Medical Center while surrounded by her three sons and their wives. Nicki was preceded in death by her parents, Aime Arthur and Simone Loretta Berube, and her two older brothers, Gilles Bernard and Paul Marcel. She is survived by her husband, Phillip Raymond Warren; younger sister, Marie Celine Cole (Robert); three sons, Stephen Mathew (Jacquelynn), David Andrew (Melissa), and Daniel Edward (Caroline); and four grandchildren, Isabella Rose, Lucas Cash, Edison Phillip and William Arthur.

Nicki was born on January 22, 1945 in Rivière Madeleine, Quebec, Canada. When she was three years old, her parents moved the family to Downey, California, where she lived until she graduated from Saint Pius X High School in 1963 before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State University, Long Beach in 1967. In 1970, she married Phillip, an Air Force staff sergeant, and gave birth to their first son Stephen in 1972 while living in San Antonio, Texas. After Phillip left the military, the family returned to Los Angeles County, where she gave birth to David in 1975, and then Daniel in 1977. The family moved to San Marcos in 1981 after Phillip took ownership of a dry-cleaning business there.

Nicki became a stay-at-home mom when Stephen was born, but her love of children and desire to serve others led her to rejoin the workforce as a part-time instructional aide in the San Marcos Unified School District in 1988. Her most important professional moment occurred in 1991, when she was transferred to Foothills High School to assist in the care of infants and toddlers in their recently established teen-parent program, the only one of its kind in the District. A state-funded expansion of the program in 1998 led to her full-time service as the program’s Childcare Coordinator, supervising more than a dozen caregivers serving 60 children and more than 80 teen-parents. In this position, she channeled her wisdom and unconditional, faith-based love of humanity to improve the lives of both younger and older children. Upon her retirement for health reasons in 2009, the childcare center was renamed “Nicki’s Place” in her honor.
