Shirley Mersy Obituary

Shirley A. Mersy (nee Nelson) of Vista, CA, passed away on July 19, 2018, after a short battle with congestive heart disease. Born in Ashland, WI on December 3, 1927, she is preceded in death by her mother Elvie Green (nee Johnson), husband of 50 years Frank H. Mersy Jr. (USMC ret.) and twin sons Thomas and Jerome.

A two time cancer survivor (thyroid and bladder), Shirley was a firm believer in giving back to her community and was known as a "mover and shaker" for Vista seniors. In addition to volunteering for the American Cancer Society and United Ostomy Association for many years, she also ran Vista;s senior bingo for over 15 years, and served as a Senior Commissioner to the Vista City Counsel. One of her proudest accomplishments was the introduction of the city's Out and About transportation program for seniors.

Her hobbies included gardening and bingo, and she was an avid sports fan. A lifelong Packer Backer, Shirley was proud to have attended Superbowl XXXII in San Diego between her Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos.

She leaves behind her sons Frank, Mike, Larry (Julie), and Terry, 6 grandchildren, and 5 great grandsons. Her positive attitude and friendly smile will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 4, at 1pm at Allen Brothers Mortuary, 1315 S. Santa Fe Ave in Vista, Ca.
