Edward Robert Baker passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Patricia A. Baker.
Ed proudly served 21 years in the United States Air Force, during which he and his family lived in various states and countries. After retiring from the military, the family settled in Escondido in 1972, and Ed remained a resident of San Diego County for the rest of his life. He later returned to college, earning a degree in archaeology and beginning a second career focused on Southern California Native American sites. His work on numerous archaeological digs reflected his enduring curiosity and respect for Native American culture.
He is survived by his five children: Mary L. Baker (Debra Kossler), Robert E. Baker, Patricia L. (Baker) Delgado, Kathleen (Katt) Baker, and Laura M. Baker Fontenot (Donnie Fontenot); twelve grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters, Kathleen Nutter and Patricia Pierson, and his brother, Richard Baker.
In retirement, Ed took great joy in woodworking, creating custom furniture for his wife and children and a backyard playhouse enjoyed by generations of his descendants. He was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. He also enjoyed gardening, tending to fruit trees and vegetable beds that nourished both body and spirit. After he and Pat retired, they embarked on a year-long journey in their small RV, exploring the natural beauty of the mainland United States, Alaska, and Canada. They especially loved visiting national parks, where Ed's appreciation for history, landscapes, and wildlife came to life. Their shared sense of adventure took them to remote trails and scenic byways, creating lasting memories together.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026—location to be determined.
In place of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
