Gretchen (Avey) Hughes passed away on 6/5/2021 at 88 years of age, in Vista, CA surrounded by family.
She was born on 12/29/1932 in Auburn, Nebraska to William Frances Avey and Dorothy (Sloan) Avey. She married Glenn L. Goodwin on March 25, 1951, in Fullerton, California. Gretchen and Glenn had two daughters together (Polly and Robin). She remarried in 1966 to William (Bill) Robert Hughes. They were married for 42 years until his death in 2010. Gretchen worked for the Vista Unified School District for 23 years, and thoroughly enjoyed camping, reading (especially James Patterson), spending time with her family, and playing cards with her close friends. Gretchen was a proud member of the Vista community and loved her town. From her weekly Quilting class at Fat Quarters Quilt shop with her daughter, to visiting Sunrise Café, she raised a family for over 50 years in this town and loved the community she built. She built fond memories in family trips to San Felipe, Mexico, the Sierra mountains, and even had the chance to tour the country in retirement with Bill in their Bounder motorhome.
Gretchen was a beautiful woman, a doting wife, a caring mother, and a kind grandmother. Grandma Foo Foo will be survived by her daughters, Robin and Polly, their husbands John Davis and John Savage, Polly’s Son Johnny and his wife Bekki, and their children Haddie, Jono, and Izzy.
There will be a Funeral on Friday, June 11. The family requests prayers for Gretchen and the family in mourning, but this will be a private service.
