Harolds Story
Harold George MacDermot of Vista, California died March 16, 2023at the age of 93. He was born to George and Margaret MacDermot in Santa Monica, California. While in high school, he joined the Naval Reserve which eventually sent him to Korean waters aboard a refrigerated supply ship.
In 1949 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Seavey and together, they celebrated almost 74 years of marriage. Harold earned his BA at the University of California at Riverside, his Master's Degree and PHD at the University of Oregon, majoring in Education. He was instrumental in introducing the earliest computers in the schools throughout Minnesota. He taught not only in elementary schools but also at Beloit College in Wisconsin and Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota, retiring from the State Department of Education in St Paul, Minnesota as a technology curriculum specialist.
Following retirement, Harold and Betty put most of their belongings in storage and traveled the country for two years. As camping enthusiasts, they followed up by camp hosting in favorite campsites in state parks on Lake Superior, Florida coast, Anza Borrego Desert, California Redwoods and even a lighthouse on the Oregon coast. They were fortunate to take several cruises and trips to Europe, Japan and Hong Kong. They settled in Vista where they were active in the Vista United Methodist Church. Harold served as financial secretary there and helped manage the Cable Trust from its beginnings.
He is survived by his wife Betty: two daughters, Linda (Eric) Mihata in Oregon and Wendy (Thomas) Sullivan in Minnesota: two sons, Brent MacDermot in Oregon and David (Victoria) MacDermot in Fallbrook, California. The couple have eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Harold will be buried at Miramar National Cemetery.
