Isabel E. (Belle) Wells, age 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Two days earlier on Easter Sunday she was surrounded by 3 generations of her loving family.
Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico she married young and divorced after 8 children. She then moved to San Diego, as a single Mom with her children, 59 years ago. She taught her children the value of reading (read everything cover to cover, including the newspaper,) and the value of a good education. She led by example, while working days she attended Lincoln High School in the evenings to earn her GED.
She taught her children to help others in need as her extended family had done to support her as she raised her family. As a result, her family has had successful careers in health care, affordable housing, banking, and workers’ rights. Married James Wells (World War II Veteran) in August 1980 and were married for 21 years until his passing in 2001. They enjoyed traveling, caring for their grandchildren and walking around Harbor Island. Retired from University of California Medical Center as an interpreter where she not only translated for doctors and patients, but she provided comfort and compassion to the families of pediatric cancer patients undergoing treatment at the hospital.
She was a member of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church (Lemon Grove, CA) for over 30 years where she served on the Parish Council, Fall Festival Committee and a volunteer reader for the elementary school. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas- Court Teresa of Avila where she served as Vice Regent and Financial Secretary.
Belle was a happy person loved by all who met her. She enjoyed music, dancing, and being with her family and friends She collected bells from around the world and family and friends added to the collection from their travels. She is survived by her 7 children, Arthur Lujan, Carol Ornelas, Anna Marie Bello, Debi Llata, Dorothy Lujan, Sharon Ramirez, Janet Davidson, and Mark Lujan, who preceded her death. She also has 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild as well as her sister Mary Maes (La Mesa, CA) and her constant beloved companion, Dusty (her rescue pup).
She will remain the Queen of our Hearts forever.
