It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Kevin Mirau, age 73. John died from cancer, at home in San Marcos, CA, on June 14, 2025, with his loving wife Susan by his side as he peacefully slipped away. During his illness, John participated in several clinical trials related to his type of rare cancer, which will undoubtedly be of benefit to so many suffering people.
John was born June 9, 1952 in Chisholm, MN to John H. Mirau and Audrey (Haselhurst) Mirau. The Mirau family moved from Deerwood, MN, to Southern California in 1966 and settled in Simi Valley, CA, where John graduated from Royal High School.
John graduated from California State University Northridge in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and graduated from University of San Diego School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree in 1976.
John was hired directly out of law school by the San Bernardino Firm of Surr & Hellyer (later Reid & Hellyer) where John practiced real estate and tax law for 18 years. During that time John ascended to a leadership position with the Firm and attained State Bar recognition as a Certified Specialist in taxation law.
In 1994 John became a founding partner of the Firm of Mirau, Edwards, Cannon & Harter (later Mirau, Edwards, Cannon, Lewin & Tooke), a Firm he led until he retired as a partner in 2021. John’s advice was regularly sought after, so he continued to practice “of counsel” to the Firm until his passing.
Throughout his career, John dedicated innumerable hours to various charitable and community organizations; his dedication, wisdom and compassion resulting in leading many of those organizations. Those same attributes led many local, state and national elected officials to seek out John’s advice and counsel.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. John lived a life full of love, laughter and dedication to his family and passions. John will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, intelligence, fairness, moral compass, sense of justice, loyalty, level headedness, sense of adventure, and perhaps mostly for his sense of humor. He loved listening to jazz and enjoyed attending concerts. He was an avid golfer and hiker and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. John loved good food and wouldn’t eat leftovers because there were too many other foods to explore!
John is survived by his wife Susan Reische; sons Kevin Mirau and Matt Mirau (Natasha) and granddaughter Naomi (Mimi); siblings Steve Mirau (Cindy), Pam Mirau, Peter Mirau (Helen); Sue Mirau, Mark Mirau (Edie), Laura Kell, and nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
John is predeceased by his parents John and Audrey Mirau.
A Memorial will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, 10 AM, at the Mitten Building in Redlands, CA. For those unable to attend the Redlands Memorial, a Jazz Evensong service will be dedicated in John's memory on Sunday, August 10, 2025, 4 PM-5:30 PM, at St Michael's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Carlsbad, CA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to YouthHope Foundation of Redlands, CA, Interval House in Long Beach, CA, or City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte, CA.
