In Loving Memory of
Norman Eckert
Norman Gale Eckert was born 5 June 1942 in St Louis, Missouri. The youngest of four siblings, born into a working family. His father was the first cross-country driver for north American Van Lines, and his mother ran the business starting in 1953.
He attended Vista High School and played on the Varsity Football team (Go Big Red!); how we wish we could have seen him play! He graduated in 1960. After high school, he served in the National Guard from 1965-1968.
He married the love of his life, Elizabeth Austin, in 1967. They were married for 58 years. They had a daughter, Lisa, in 1969. The married couple then moved to San Diego in 1997.
A longtime resident of Vista, and throughout his life as a businessman, Norman was a fixture in the Vista and North County Community. He worked and supervised the family business, Eckert's Van & Storage, for over 60 years. He was a Band Booster for Vista High School in the 1980's, and a supporter for the Boys & Girls Club of Vista as well.
When he wasn't working hard, Norman enjoyed fishing, sailing, and hunting wild game. He also found joy in traveling, restoring and driving classic cars, and Warner Bros cartoons. He appreciated good food and a good party. He was particularly fond of building projects and doing handyman work around his home and garden.
He is survived by his wife and daughter, and his grandson, Sebastian; as well as several cherished nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
He passed away on 29 June 2025, still holding his beloved wife's hand. No services are planned, other than a private ceremony where his ashes will be scattered at sea. Condolences and donations to charities in his name can be left with Allen Brothers Mortuary in Vista.
Broken Chain
We little knew that day, God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, In death, we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you, You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again
