Salvatore “Sal” Ange, 92, of Oceanside, San Diego, passed away October 22 after a valiant but short-lived fight with cancer. Born into a vibrant Sicilian family, Sal entered this world August 20, 1933, in Brooklyn, NY to Frank Ange and Laura San Clemente. Ever the engineer, dad graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in June 1951, followed by a short stint at New York University majoring in aircraft/mechanical engineering. His education was initially cut short when he enlisted in the US Airforce in 1956, serving as an Aeronautical Engineer B-29 Navigator during the Korean Conflict stationed at Adak Alaska. In 1955 he married his first wife Dottie, travelled cross-country in a Pontiac with Dottie and his cousin Jean, and moved to California where he began his life as husband and dad to 5 children while stationed at March Air Force Base. Upon his honorable discharge in 1961, Sal entered civil service with the Department of Navy and subsequently joined the Naval Ship Missile Systems Engineering Station (NSMSES) where he served 40+ years, retiring at the rank of GM-15 as a Contracts Manager for the renamed Naval Ship Weapons Systems Engineering Station (NSWSES), Port Hueneme, California. During his career Sal received numerous Meritorious Service Awards.
In 2003 Sal married the love of his life, Carolyn, and moved to Oceanside where they lived happily together for 22 years. Together they travelled, danced, and hosted family and friends at holiday gatherings, including inviting military stationed at Camp Pendelton for Thanksgiving dinner.
Sal’s passions were his annual fishing trips with family and friends, serving as coordinator for the annual football pool, golfing, and his weekly virtual gaming sessions with his son Chris. He completed his bachelor’s degree and took up flying for a while. He was an active volunteer in numerous organizations - a referee for the California Football Officials Association, treasurer and historian for the NSMSES Alumni Association, and an usher and member of the Knights of Columbus in Camarillo and Oceanside, most recently serving with Council 9022 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlsbad.
Sal leaves behind his beloved wife Carolyn, his sons Chris (Viola), Frank (Lisa), and Curt (Barbara), daughter Valerie (Johnny) Barraza, Carolyn’s children Susanne (Raymond) McDaniel, and Peter (Tambra) Tholl, along with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was welcomed into eternity by his grandparents Alberto and Calogera (Scurti) Ganci, parents Frank and Laura, his first-born son Salvatore Jr., previous partners Dorothy Neu and Eileen Potter, and numerous relatives and friends.
