Susan Maney-Oviatt, age 82, of Escondido, CA passed away on March 17, 2026. She was born in Pasadena, CA to John and Virginia Ward on May 18, 1944.
Susan graduated from St. Andrews High School in Pasadena, CA and after graduating she embarked on a career in business. She was employed by Security Pacific Bank and later by San Diego Trust and Savings Bank where she was Vice President. Her title of Vice President earned her the opportunity to throw the first pitch at a San Diego Padre baseball game.
She married the love of her life, James Oviatt, Jr. in 1983. Together they enjoyed traveling the world. Some of their trips included Russia, Spain, Italy, and many others. They particularly loved to spend time in Mexico at their “Villa”. Their Villa was located on the shore of the Pacific near Ensenada, Mexico. During their marriage, their home was a place of gathering for both friends and family. Guests always enjoyed a fabulous meal, great discussions and many laughs.
Susan was a member of the Escondido Sunrise Rotary Club. She had the distinct honor of being the club’s first woman president and served in that role from 1991-1992.
In addition to her parents Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; beloved daughter Kyla Maney-Pearson; brothers Derrick Ward and Terry Ward; and grandson James Shirey.
Susan is survived by daughters Susan (Mark) Winter, Fuquay-Varina, NC and Cathie (Sherri) Oviatt, Brodhead, WI; special niece Chris Thiele of Scottsdale, AZ and her pets Einstein and Cisco. Susan will be sadly missed by special friends Peter Acosta and his husband Sean McHenry Acosta of San Diego, CA.
Susan moved from her home to Assisted Living in November. At that time great-grandchildren Sierra Banda and Alex Banda (Wisconsin} went with Cathie and Chris to visit with Susan and to help with work associated with Susan moving. They enjoyed visiting with her and she enjoyed their company. Susan’s granddaughter, Christina Cole was able to visit with her in her final days and helped to tie up loose ends after her transition.
Living so far away is so difficult when a loved one is transitioning. Cabillo Hospice deserves a huge thank you for the wonderful care given to Susan, as well as the constant communication with family.
A small group of people who were close to Susan had dinner and memorialized her by sharing stories.
Rest in peace “General”, you will be missed! Donations in Susan’s honor may be made to the Escondido Sunrise Rotary at https://escondidosunriserotary.org/donate.
