Tyler Johnson Obituary
Tyler Johnson passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at UCSD hospital from Glioblastoma.
Born on May 8, 1973 to C. Wesley and Concetta "Penny" Johnson, Tyler was a lifelong resident of southern California. Tyler married his partner and love of his life, Karen Lacey, on April 15, 2023.
Tyler was known for his kind heart, easy-going demeanor, and love for all things BMW. He was the Director at Large for the San Diego Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America and took great pride in riding and racing motorcycles and cars, and leading community events for the organization.
He was also passionate about geography and water systems; after graduating from Poway High, he attended the University of California at Berkeley and earned a degree in Geography and a Masters Degree in Geographic Information Science from San Diego State University. Tyler worked as a Research Geographer for the United States Geological Survey at the California Water Science Center. He has been widely-recognized for his Geographic Information System expertise and was a key contributor to creating systems and tools to help modernize water safety.
Tyler loved traveling with his wife Karen; they visited countless states across the U.S. and explored countries like Italy, Vietnam, and France among others. His favorite moments were spent here in California surfing, strumming his guitar, or sitting at the table on Sunday mornings reading The San Diego Union Tribune. Tyler never met a stranger, never had an enemy, and was one of the kindest people you'd ever meet.
Tyler is survived by his wife Karen Lacey of Vista, California. He also leaves behind his mother Penny, brothers Christopher (Mary) Johnson and nephew Jared of San Marcos, Eric (Barbara) Johnson of San Marcos, Kirt (Kimberley) Johnson and nephews Luke and Liam of Los Angeles.
He was preceded in death by his father C. Wesley Johnson. Those who knew Tyler understand that he would appreciate a contribution to Father Joe’s Villages or Glioblastoma Research Organization to help his legacy live on.
